Ultrasound protocol for referring hospitals

You or your client may request an appointment through our website. Once an appointment has been requested, our ultrasound department will reach out to your client to discuss our process and request records relating to area of concern. All patients must receive a pre-procedure sedative 2 hours prior to appointment, this is not optional.

Recommended sedative for abdominal Ultrasounds:

Recommended sedative for abdominal Ultrasounds:

For Dogs: Trazodone at 10mg/kg to 15mg/kg given 2 hours before dropping off. For more aggressive/stressed/fearful pets, please have them give the higher end of dose the night before and re-dose again 2 hours before appointment.

For Cats: Gabapentin at 20mg/kg 2 hours before drop-off. For more aggressive/stressed/fearful pets, please have them give the dose the night before and re-dose again 2 hours before appointment.

Recommended sedative for Echocardiograms

For Dogs and Cats: Gabapentin at 20mg/kg 2 hours before drop -off. For more aggressive/stressed/fearful pets, please have them give the dose the night before and re-dose again 2 hours before appointment. NO TRAZODONE.

* We do not perform echocardiograms on cats under 1 year old and canines under 2 due to complexity with possible congenital issues. *

The report will be sent directly to you within 48 hours of procedure. Your client will be advised that the appointment will be with the ultrasound technicians only and no doctor will be available for questions or a consultation and should contact their primary hospital.

Your clients will have the option to stay with their pet until the start of the procedure if they would like. Once the procedure prep starts, the client will be excused, and we will contact them once the patient is ready for pickup.

* If time permits, we recommend giving your client enough of the sedative so they can do a “trial run” at home to see how the sedative affects their pet prior to the day of procedure. *

For basic abdominal and basic echocardiograms, the referring veterinarian reviews the report with the owner. Please clarify with your clients that a Veterinarian will not be available during their pet’s procedure, and we will reiterate that they will be referred back to you to discuss results. *Please be aware that due to the complexities with possible congenital concerns, we cannot perform echocardiograms on felines under 1 year of age and canines under 2 years of age*

We try our best to implement Fear Free methods with all of our patients. We require that an oral sedative be prescribed to be given 2 hours prior to their appointment. For suggested protocols please refer to our ultrasound protocols above.

Our Reports are received within 12-16 business hours, typically. Do you request an expedited (STAT) report to be received in 3 business hours? This would need to be approved by the pet owner as there is a $125 additional fee for an expedited report. (The expedited report applies to the abdominal ultrasounds only)
While it is up to the discretion of the ultrasound technician whether or not an injectable sedative will be needed, please indicate if you believe, due to behavioral concerns, that this will need to be done with this patient.
