How Do I Know My Pet has a Skin Problem?
You can tell if your pet has a skin condition if they exhibit any of these signs:
- Hair loss (bald patches between the toes, under the arms/legs, on the backs of the legs, etc.)
- Red, raw patches of skin
- Dry, scaly patches
- Dandruff
- A dull, greasy coat
- Odor
- Ears are red and swollen
What Makes Dogs & Cats Allergic?
Many of the things that make people allergic can also make pets allergic. Pollen from trees, grass, mold, and dust are just a few common allergens for dogs and cats. But there can be other culprits, too, such as:
- Fleas (flea allergy dermatitis)
- Proteins in food (chicken, pork, eggs)
- Mites
- Cleaning solutions
- Synthetic fabrics
Ear Care for Pets
Ear infections (otitis externa) are common in dogs, especially dogs with floppy ears (though any breed can be affected). This condition causes the outer ear to become red and inflamed, and it can be quite painful. Your dog might respond to their discomfort by scratching/rubbing their ears or shaking their head. Ear infections can produce discharge and a strong, unpleasant odor.
If you think your pet has an ear infection, we recommend that you contact us as soon as possible so we can help them get relief. In addition to treating the infection, which can take time, your veterinarian will also advise you on how best to prevent future infections. This might require regular ear cleanings and removal of hair inside the ear.
